How to live in Nipawin – Everyday Rules

If you’re new to town, first of all — welcome. There’s a lot to get used to when moving to a new place, and we want to make that easier for you. Here’s a quick guide to how things usually work around here. It’s not everything, but it’ll cover the basics so you can avoid fines, feel a bit more at home, and know where to go when you need help.

Garbage, Recycling, and Waste

Garbage and recycling are picked up on alternating weeks — one week is garbage, the next is recycling. Make sure you check the schedule, so the right bin goes out.

Your bin must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day, with the lid fully closed. No bags or junk left beside the bin — they won’t take it.

For big items like furniture, appliances, electronics, or yard waste, take them to Sarcan or the Waste Diversion Centre. That’s where you drop off anything that doesn’t go in your regular bin.

Please don’t dump stuff in the bush, alleyways, or empty lots — that’s illegal, and yeah, you can be fined for it.

Snow Removal

It snows here. A lot. And when it does, you’re responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of your place within 48 hours after it stops. That means shoveling or sanding — just something to make it safe to walk on.

Don’t toss snow onto the road or someone else’s property. And don’t panic if the Town hasn’t cleared your street yet — main roads and emergency routes get done first.

Pet Rules

Got a dog or cat? Once they’re six months old, they need to be licensed with the Town. It’s affordable, and it helps bring them home if they ever get loose.

Pets must be leashed when outside, and yes – you still have to pick up after them, even in the snow. Don’t let pets wander freely or bark nonstop. It can lead to a bylaw complaint.

Need a spot to let your dog run? There’s an off-leash dog park at 706 6th Street West.

Noise and Parking

People here value their peace and quiet, especially at night. Try to keep things down between 11 PM and 7 AM — no loud music, parties, or power tools during those hours. A one-time thing might be fine but repeat complaints can lead to a fine.

When parking:

  1. Don’t block sidewalks, alleys, or fire hydrants
  2. Obey all parking signs
  3. In the winter, move your car if there’s a snow route sign so the plows can get through

Fire Safety and Emergencies

Every home should have a working smoke alarm and at least one clear exit. Test your alarms regularly — they save lives.

For any emergency (fire, crime, medical), call 911 right away.

For fire safety advice, inspections, or questions about your home’s safety, you can reach out to the fire department directly or check the emergency services page.
