How winter works in Nipawin

Winter in Saskatchewan hits different. It’s cold, it’s long, and sometimes it snows before the leaves even fall. But don’t worry — we’ve got your back.

What to Expect

  • – Temperatures can drop to –30°C or colder. Yes, that’s real.
  • – Snow often starts in October or November and can stick around until April.
  • – You’ll need proper winter gear: a warm coat, boots, gloves, a hat, and layers. Leave the fashion coat at home.

Street and Sidewalk Snow Removal

  • – The Town clears major roads first — residential streets are next.
  • – You are responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of your home or business within 48 hours after a snowfall.
  • – Don’t push snow onto the street or your neighbour’s property — that can lead to a bylaw fine.
  • – During plowing, parking may be restricted in certain areas. Watch for snow route signs.

Parking and Driving

  • – Don’t block fire hydrants, sidewalks, or driveways.
  • – When it drops below –15°C, plug your car in overnight using a block heater.
  • – Keep a winter kit in your vehicle: blanket, small shovel, water, snacks, phone charger, jumper cables.

Tips for Getting Through the Cold

  • – Dress in layers — base layer, warm sweater, insulated jacket, toque, gloves, and boots.
  • – Carry lip balm and lotion — winter air is dry and harsh on skin.
  • – If you’re unsure what to do or need help, reach out to the Town Office or ask a neighbour. Everyone here has had their first winter, too.
