When do you need a permit?

Before building or renovating anything on your property, check to see if a permit is required. It’s not about making things difficult — it’s about making sure buildings are safe and legal for everyone.

You likely need a permit if you are:

  • – Building a deck, garage, or shed
  • – Putting up a fence
  • – Renovating the inside or outside of your home
  • – Adding a basement suite, driveway, or garden suite
  • – Starting or expanding a business from home
  •

What to Do:

  • – Check with the Planning Office — We’ll tell you if you need a development or building permit, or both.
  • – Submit your plans — This includes drawings, dimensions, and how the space will be used.
  • – Wait for approval before you start work — Starting early can lead to delays or extra costs.
  • – Not Sure? Just Ask. If you’re unsure whether your project needs a permit, call or visit the Town Office. We’d rather help you beforehand than issue a stop-work order after.
